Taiwan Nichi Nichi Shinpo (《臺灣日日新報》), published from May 6, 1898, to March 31, 1944, issued over 15,800 editions. In 1924, its circulation reached 18,790 copies, making it the longest-running newspaper in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. It was widely regarded for the representativeness of its content and was the most enduring, content-rich, and widely circulated newspaper in the first half of the twentieth century. The archive offers nearly three million indexed headlines and over 150,000 page images converted into universally accessible digital formats, reproducing the valuable historical records of Taiwan from a century ago.
In its early days, the newspaper featured six pages. Beginning on July 1, 1905, the publisher expanded the Chinese-language section and launched the Chinese Taiwan Nichi Nichi Shinpo (《漢文台灣日日新報》) as a standalone edition with six pages per day—almost on par with the Japanese edition. This independent Chinese-language version, published from 1905 to 1911, met the needs of Taiwanese readers at the time and made the newspaper more comprehensive. The Hanwen Taiwan Daily News documented Taiwan's social atmosphere, cultural activities, current affairs, and social phenomena of the era, becoming an invaluable source for historical research on Taiwan today.
